Contemporary Artist

ARTIST BIO

Inspired by natural simplicity, Emma Atkins has a passion for landscapes and seascapes. The natural landscape where nothing is manmade, captivates her and she is motivated to communicate how immersive and emotive something so simple and organic can be. She paints mostly on a large scale as it allows her to be expressive and unrestricted by application of media and to paint with high energy.

She grew up by the sea, spending the first few years of her life on the Isle of Wight so has always found comfort in painting the ocean. Many of her early works where she began exploring a multitude of different media are therefore of Seascapes from Ryde beach, Shanklin seafront and the cliffs of Alum Bay. She is now still inspired by landscapes and seascapes that have been left in their natural form and have links to her childhood or memories.

Atkins believes that the surface of an artwork is as equally important as the image created. In response, she pushes the properties and textural qualities of everyday materials. She is constantly exploring how new materials and liquids react with each other, in order to create textured paints and surfaces, strengthening the themes and emotion within her paintings.
